Florida leads nation in elderly motorist deaths

On Behalf of | Oct 17, 2018 | Uncategorized |

The Sunshine State is one of the most popular places in the nation for men and women over 60 to settle down and retire in. They can enjoy the unique culture, warm weather and explore the state’s cultural history as they finally enjoy putting in constant 8-hour work days.

Unfortunately, many elderly residents are unable to enjoy their retirement after one dangerous trips on the Florida roads. Recent studies show that Florida continues to have the highest amount of older driver fatalities in the country. It is important for elder drivers to know of the various hazards they could face in the southernmost state’s roads.

Too much accessibility

The same report featuring Florida’s national ranking for elderly driving deaths also reveals that the state arguably makes the most efforts towards improving their roads for older motorists. They increase the size of road signs, move left-turn lanes further from intersections and install more reflective materials in road signs. However, the article also features arguments against these measures for making the streets more accessible. One researcher featured said that these measures will encourage more people to drive, which in turn results in more accidents.

Additionally, the warmer weather in Florida also encourages more residents and tourists to go out and drive more. Part of why summer has the most motor vehicle accidents during the year in the nation is because more states get to enjoy a warmer climate. In Florida, people can go to the beach and enjoy other outdoor activities during almost any month.

Negligent driving

Warmer weather means it is also easier for younger drivers to get their driver’s license. In the northern states, many students wait for the summer so the fall or winter conditions will not impact their license test. This reflects in the report, as the article cites statistics stating that 19 million crashes that resulted in elderly driver fatalities were from men less than 20 years old.

Additionally, Florida’s distracted driving accident count has dramatically increased within the last couple of years. There were more than 50,000 distracted driving crashes in the state last year, which is not helped by the state not treating texting and driving as a primary enforcement. Even though some older men and women might not be physically able to drive a car properly, plenty of younger men and women that occupy the roads prove that more are less qualified to be on the road.

Car accidents not only have a high chance of putting an older man or woman’s life in danger, but they can also have a harmful effect on the victim’s finances with vehicle damage and medical bills. If you need assistance in recovering from a traumatic road experience, a personal injury attorney can help you acquire compensation so you can rest easier.
